Redfish and Twisted Line

Saltwater Fishing - Sat, 12/26/2009 - 07:51
The sheepshead were there as I suspected, and I did catch a number of them – up to 8 pounds. However, what normally would be a welcome fish – redfish – were also there. Not that I don’t love catching redfish – I do. But today I had six pound spinning gear, a quarter ounce jig head and fiddler crabs. What I didn’t need was to be pulled off my sheepshead to fight a big fish. But, that is exactly what happened.

Just a Jetty Fishing Day

Saltwater Fishing - Sat, 12/26/2009 - 07:51
The winter months are awfully good to me. This is when one good day can put jetty fishing at its best. Sheepshead, redfish, trout, bluefish, and drum – almost all these species can be found on and along the jetties this time of year.

A Time for Learning

I remember being in the boat with my oldest son on his first "fishing trip". He was almost three, and his grandfather had him on his lap helping him reel in a fish....

South Atlantic Fishing Regs

Saltwater Fishing - Sat, 12/26/2009 - 07:51
The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (SAFMC)recently and quietly published Amendment 16 in the Federal Register. With little fanfare (for obvious reasons) they placed new rules on bottom fishing fro grouper and other species that will go into effect on July 29, 2009, from North Carolina through the Florida Keys.

Jim Stalcup & I live in Austin, Texas. I caught this nice 26" Spanish Mackrel on live Shrimp about 1/2 mile offshore at Padre Island in Texas. I was fishing from my Kayak & he gave me a pretty good ride before I got him in the boat. It was a blast!

Cold Weather Sheepshead

Saltwater Fishing - Sat, 12/26/2009 - 07:51
On a day when other fishermen would stay home, I tend to venture out into the weather. Cold, winter temperatures mean sheepshead in my neck of the woods (or would it be my piece of the ocean?). Either way, winter is sheepshead time, and the bite along the southern Atlantic coast has been hot recently.

Reduced Limits and Seasonal Cl

Saltwater Fishing - Sat, 12/26/2009 - 07:51
The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (SAFMC) has formulated regulations that have affected both the commercial and recreational fisherman. These regulations have reduced the bag limit on a number of species, shortened the season on many other species, and very shortly will close the season on a significant portion of the Atlantic coast to bottom fishing for the foreseeable future. Some are wondering, “How did all this happen so fast”?

Fishing for Jail Birds!

Saltwater Fishing - Sat, 12/26/2009 - 07:51
Have you ever had someone try to teach you how to do something only to come to the realization that what he is teaching you is almost impossible? That's the way I felt many years ago when my father was trying to teach me how to set the hook on, and catch sheepshead. Known for their bait stealing prowess, these hard fighting fish have caused more grief to more fishermen than just about any other fish.
