Still..........................

Rugged is showing up late for school after shooting three rabbits, cleaning them, and leaving them soaking in water with a little salt and placed in the refrigerator for your mom.....

Getting up way early, climbing into a deer stand, knocking off a doe, field dressing it, dragging it out of the woods and hanging it in the garage, then going to school and aceing a test on history.....

Or, getting up before dawn to go fishing on a school day because the bluegill are bedding, knocking out about 35 of them, taking them home, cleaning them and still getting to school on time...

I've done all three of these. I also used to do some squirrel hunting in the mornings before school. Hey, it helped feed our family. I come by it honestly because my Dad did it before me.

It was rugged and it was fun. If I had it to do all over again, I would have done it more often. You can't learn everything in school.

Good thoughts

That is very good advice Dinosaur. I have a 17 year old son who every day has to decide between living the life others want for him and what he wants. It is hard as a parent to embrace and totally admire a child that goes their own way and yet know that his life would be so much easier if he accomplished a few things along the way like free education.

My son is very intelligent, he pays for this with thinking too much Confused

I want my kids to have a carefree life and follow their dreams but I want them to feel a sense of pride in what ever they do (and not live in my house past 25 ha ha ha)

Rugged Hunting Kid

It looks as though the Hunting Kid is well on his way to becoming rugged. He may, however, fail to become educated. I've been there and done that. I always figured a netfull of fish or a hanging deer was more important than knowing what day Jacques Cartier discovered the St. Lawrence River. On the other hand...........

I managed to graduate from college in spite of my dereliction. All were surprised. I had a career, made a bunch of money, raised a family, and did all the right things. Now I'm a derelict again. But I have some great toys for doing it.

Hunting Kid, get an education, just don't let it rule you. Don't let anyone tell you what is important. You have to decide that for yourself. The general rule to follow is to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. This includes those that may come after you are long gone.

Rugged:

I love the comment when the site comes up that says rugged is taking out a hunting knife to cut your steak in a restaurant. I can't tell you the number of times I've actually done this. I carry a CRKT (Columbia River Knife an Tool) M-16. This is a folder lockback that can be opened with the flick of a wrist. It's a great knife, extremely good steel. I call it my Cricket due to the obvious. I've shocked a few people with it, but that knife sure cuts a steak.

RUGGED

Rugged is dragging a 250 pound buck 1/2 mile out of the woods using your stand harness to tie to the antlers. Cutting firewood with an axe and carrying the 100lb. logs out by hand. Catching a twenty pound snapping turtle by the tail from a boat and paddling yourself to shore over 40 yards with the turtle hanging over the side in your left hand. Being attacked by a 100lb. feral dog and killing him with a knife. Butchering a deer and having blood all the way up to your elbows. Stripping a little flank steak off a skinned coyote and eating it raw. Using "chick flick" DVD's to sight in your .50cal blackpowder rifle. Barbequeing a groundhog on your Brinkman grill and feeding it to "guests" as rabbit. And, tracking down a deer on foot, sneaking up on it so it doesn't know you're there, and letting it go because you don't need the meat.

I've done all these things and a lot more. Some of them, I'm even proud of.
